Clinical Application of the Long-Term Care Fracture Prevention Recommendations for Frail Older Adults
Date & Time:
February 14, 2025, at 12:00 PM EST
Description:
Residents in long-term care (LTC) facilities are often frail, dependent, and vulnerable, requiring more complex care than older adults living in the community. Despite their unique needs, many interventions designed to reduce fracture risk are inconsistently implemented in LTC settings, and current clinical practice guidelines for osteoporosis focus largely on community-dwelling adults.
This program addresses these gaps by showcasing practical applications of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological fracture prevention strategies tailored to frail older adults in LTC.
Learning Objectives:
By actively participating in this program, attendees will gain the ability to:
- Assess fracture risk using the Fracture Risk Scale.
- Apply evidence-based recommendations for fracture prevention in LTC settings.
- Recognize the challenges and barriers to implementing these recommendations and identify enablers who can overcome them.
Guest Speakers:
- Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou, BScN, MD, MSc, FRCP(C), FACP, FCGS, Professor of Medicine, Divisions of Geriatric, McMaster University, Medicine & Rheumatology and Department of HEI, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Geriatric Medicine & Healthy Aging, Executive Director, Geras Centre for Aging Research
- Dr. Sidney Feldmen, MD, CCFP, FCFP Chief, Department of Family and Community Medicine, Baycrest Health Sciences Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto
