Canada’s 2024 Dementia Strategy: Progress and Innovation

The 2024 Report to Parliament on Canada’s National Dementia Strategy celebrates impactful initiatives improving dementia care, reducing stigma, and enhancing the quality of life for older adults and caregivers.

Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI): With $74M in funding, CABHI has supported 510 projects, fostering innovations that improve the well-being of older adults.

Key highlights include:

  • GERAS DANCE Program: This evidence-based dance program combines physical activity and cognitive training. Now, in 40 locations across Canada, it has engaged over 1,000 older adults in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
  • Dementia Foundations Program: Adapted from iGeriCare, this e-learning program for unregulated healthcare providers, like personal support workers, has reached 1,182 professionals across 28 organizations to improve dementia and caregiver support training.
  • GeriMedRisk Program: This virtual service connects healthcare professionals with geriatric specialists to optimize medication management for older adults with dementia and other conditions. It has positively impacted over 14,400 professionals and supported more than 5,000 older adults and caregivers.
